When should you use your fog lights?

Fog lights are specifically designed to enhance visibility in foggy conditions. Their beam is wider and lower to the ground compared to standard headlights, which helps to illuminate the road directly in front of the vehicle while minimizing the amount of light that reflects off the fog (or other low-visibility conditions) back towards the driver's eyes. Using fog lights in such conditions reduces the risk of glare, allowing for better visibility of the road and any potential hazards.

In contrast, using fog lights during heavy rain, in cities at night, or only at sunset would not be appropriate. Heavy rain can often reflect light differently, and standard headlights are typically sufficient. In urban settings, street lighting generally provides adequate visibility, making fog lights unnecessary and potentially dazzling for other drivers. Moreover, using fog lights at sunset does not align with their intended purpose; sunset does not create the same visibility issues as fog does. Thus, fog lights should be reserved primarily for foggy conditions to ensure optimal safety on the road.
